Roy Buckhanan of the Shreveport chapter of the Buffalo Soldiers, a national black motorcycle club,
places a U.S. flag in front of the gravestone of Pfc. Herbert Miles, one of Shreveport's first war dead
from the Korean War, in historic Star Cemetery on Friday.

Additionally, members of the local chapter of the Buffalo Soldiers, a motorcycle club whose members
perpetuate the memory of black cavalry soldiers who served in the decades after the Civil War, will
help with site security and parking, said event coordinator Diane Salaam.

"Friday evening, the Buffalo Soldiers will (have) marked veterans' graves with flags," she said.   (John

Star Cemetery Preservation
The National Association of the Buffalo Soldier and Trooper Motorcycle Club (NABSMC)-
Shreveport Mother Chapter, established as a modern progressive motorcycle club whose focus is
to promote a positive image among Blacks that would be respected in the community and
throughout the country, recently received an Honorary Membership to the Star Cemetery
Preservation Society Inc. The Star Cemetery was founded by the Star Cemetery Association in
1883 and is estimated to be the burial grounds for some 10,000 decedents, many of whom were
born during slavery but lived to see freedom. In 2001, the African American Multicultural
Tourism Commission placed Star Cemetery on the National Registry of Historic Sites. Shortly
after being placed on the registry, the Star Cemetery Preservation Society Inc. (SCPS) came into
existence to preserve the cemetery as a Historical and Genealogical Place for all. During the
presentation of the Honorary Membership Plaque on January 13, at the SCPS monthly meeting
Mrs. Diane Salaam stated “each time we have called upon the Buffalo Soldiers to help clean the
cemetery; hold post at an event; or place flags on veteran’s headstones, they have been there”.
This is a true testament of the NABSMC -Shreveport dedication to the community and the
preservation of African American History. Under the leadership of Roy “Soulja” Buckhanan,
President of the NABSMC-Shreveport Chapter, it’s chapter’s representatives (Kendrick “KMoe”
Moorer, Stanley “Ice-Cold” Varner Sr, and Kenneth “Counselor” Thompson Jr.) worked as
liaisons between the SCPS and NABSMC-Shreveport and coordinated support from the
Shreveport Chapter by providing assistance in cleaning gravesites, posting and removal of flags
for Veterans and Memorial Day, filling in holes caused by natural environmental
conditions/changes and removing dead branches and brushes from the cemetery grounds.
Though a lot of work still needs to be done to bring Star Cemetery’s conditions up to standards
in comparison to other historical sites, the NABSMC-Shreveport Chapter has been a key
component in the first steps in upgrading the status of the cemetery. “We proudly assisted the
SCPS with maintenance of Star Cemetery since 2005 and look forward to the many challenges
the 2008 will bring”
