The Scholarship Committee will choose scholarship recipients.  Scholarship recipients and school officials will be notified via certified letter as soon as practical, following selection of the recipients.  The recipients will be recognized at the Chapter’s May Meeting.  Additionally, a representative from the Chapter will recognize the recipients (sometime after the May Meeting) at an appropriate school sponsored function – to be jointly determined by the school’s point of contact and the committee.

Scholarship will be awarded by the use of a point system. 

Scholarships will be mailed, via certified letter, directly to the institution chosen by the recipient at the beginning of school, in early September at the beginning of the fall semester.  Scholarship will be forwarded to recipient’s school financial account.

Scholarship can only be used for qualified education expenses which include tuition and fees; and course related expenses such as books, supplies and equipment.  Any amount not used for qualifying expenses must be returned to Buffalo Soldiers & Troopers M/C of Shreveport, Louisiana, Inc.

The Buffalo Soldiers & Troopers M/C of Shreveport, Louisiana, announces its Scholarship Awards.  The scholarship awards from $500 up to $1000 for  graduating seniors that attend Caddo/Bossier Parish and surrounding area high schools.  These scholarships may be used at any higher educational institution of their choice.

Students applying for this scholarship will be selected based on the following criteria and must be included in the packet:

        1.     Academic achievement:  minimum 3.0 GPA (official school transcript)        
        2.     Financial need
        3.     Contribution to school and community
        4.     Acceptance to a degree granting institution
        5.     Two letters of recommendation
        6.     An interview

One copy of all official transcripts must be mailed to the Scholarship Committee Chairperson.  Additionally, letters of recommendation from two of the following must also be included in the scholarship application packet.

         1.     Teacher
         2.     Guidance Counselor
         3.     Minister
         4.     Employer
         5.     Community Leader

Completed scholarship packets will be accepted between January 1st through March 31st of each year (ensure your packet is mailed and postmarked before March 31).

Instructions for candidates:

(1) Prepare a letter of introduction, identifying yourself, your family background, and your educational need. Provide a brief summary of how you plan to use the scholarship funding if selected.

(2) Write a 1,000 word essay using Times New Roman 12 pt font, or handwritten in your own words on one of the following topics:

      A.   In What Way Does the Buffalo Soldier Legacy Inspire Me?

     B.   The stories of the buffalo soldiers exemplify many positive character traits. Please provide examples from the lives of Buffalo Soldiers (living or deceased) and write on four of those traits and how they can be used to help mold or develop your life?

C.   Why is it necessary that we pass on the legacy of the Buffalo Soldiers to future generations?

     D.   In What Way Does the Buffalo Soldier Legacy Inspire Me to be a Better Person and Citizen?

     E.    The Congressional Medal of Honor is presented to the recipient by the President of the United States in the name of Congress.  This is the highest award for valor presented to military members that recognized for having performed the highest degrees of bravery and self-sacrifice on the battlefield.  Please write on one of the Buffalo Soldiers awarded the Medal of Honor and what can be learned from his life, and or efforts, and commitment to duty?

All applicants are required to have an interview with the Chapter’s Scholarship Committee on a prescribed date and designated time and location set by the committee.

The scholarship will be awarded based on need, proposed use, and the standing of the candidate in relation to other competitors based on the quality of the final essay.
